Rebecca stared out at the estate from her perch on the balcony. She couldn’t see any coach coming into the grounds yet, but she was sure it was going to come. She didn’t know how to feel. It was exactly three years today since she had gotten married to Arthur, and his sister was making her first visit back to Derby since the day that Arthur had chased her out of their house.

She was scared that she would come face to face with the vicious manipulator that she had known.

“Can Lady Teresa change her ways?” Rebecca wondered.

Arthur had gone over to Devon the month before on an official assignment, and he had come back with raving accounts of his sister’s changed attitude.

“You won’t believe the way my sister welcomed me,” Arthur had said, beaming widely as he explained to his wife.

He had just come back that evening from his two-day trip to Devon. He had slept over at the Bexley estate in Devon at their house. Rebecca knew the house.

It was a huge building with two imposing pillars that went from the base of the building all the way to the roof. It was a beauty, and Arthur had mentioned his father admitting he had spent more money on that house in Devon than the house in Derby.

Its interior was fully furnished with soft sofas with exotic hairy skin. The walls were made of a dark wood that had to have been imported from a distant land.

Probably somewhere in the far reaches of Europe.

She had seen various paintings scattered in the rooms and halls of the house. Rebecca couldn’t deny that the house was more attractive than theirs.

She had come to know the house when she went for Lady Teresa’s wedding a year ago. Lady Teresa had got married to a wealthy physician. Rebecca remembered wondering how the man had got to fall in love with someone like Lady Teresa. Then she remembered not all marriages were like hers that was based on love. A lot of people married for status.

“Was it any different from her usual snobbish manner?” Rebecca had asked Arthur in response to his question.

Arthur was just coming out from the bathroom, and his hair glistened with wetness. He had walked over to his wife and sat down beside her. Rebecca didn’t mind that he was wet. She wrapped her hands around his wet body, wetting her nightgown in the process. She had missed him, and the two days he had left seemed to stretch to a week. And she had also found that she was now unable to face Harriet’s daily dose of childish exuberance without help from her husband. Her mind had flown to the days when she had brought Harriet up without any help. She had no fond memories of those days.

Arthur had dipped his mouth to meet hers. She opened her mouth wider, allowing her husband more oral penetration. She savoured his taste and thrust her tongue into his mouth.

“I am not allowing you to leave me alone in this house for more than one day anymore,” Rebecca had told him after they broke the kiss.

Arthur’s eyes had crinkled as he laughed.

“I don’t even want to leave your side for one minute,” he had answered.

“Teresa is totally changed now,” he said, returning to the beginning of their discussion, “you wouldn’t believe it if you saw her now. Married life is so good to her.”

Rebecca remembered that she had not said anything in response to his claims. She had preferred to keep her doubts in her heart. Lady Teresa had done so much damage to her that she found it difficult to forget or believe that she could change so easily.

It is easy for Arthur. She’s his sister.

She had preferred to remain in her husband’s arms and had fallen asleep in the middle of laughs as he pushed his hands under the flimsy material of her sleeping gown and tickled her by the sides and under her breasts.

She couldn’t escape today. She had to come face to face with a woman who had cost her six years of her life.

Six years of love.

She and Arthur were throwing a big party celebrating their three year marriage, and the Dowager Countess had insisted that Lady Teresa be present. Arthur who had just seen his sister behave very differently when he visited her a month ago was also eager for his sister to return to Derby.

It’s like he has forgotten he was the one who banished her. He has forgotten why she had to leave in the first place.

Rebecca turned away from the balustrade and walked back into the sitting room. The afternoon was far spent, and the party would start anytime now. She walked to the mirror in the sitting room and stared at herself one last time before she walked out of the room. Her sky blue gown was beautiful despite how much allowance had been created for her bulging belly. She rubbed her hands over the bulge and smiled.

She wasn’t surprised that she was pregnant again just over two years after she had birthed Ethan. She and Arthur could hardly keep their hands off each other. It was a wonder that she wasn’t pregnant much earlier than this. But lately she noticed he was keeping away from her.

Or is it just in my head?

“No, he is keeping away,” Rebecca said out loud.

Like this morning, Arthur had woken up and kissed her as he always did. But it had been a while since they made love so Rebecca had wrapped her hand around his member till it grew hard in her hand. Arthur had kissed her and used that as a distraction to get her hand off him. He had run out of the room saying something about preparation for their anniversary party. Rebecca didn’t like the fact that her husband was starting to lose interest in her.

Or do I look fat now?

She stared at her image in the mirror and couldn’t make up her mind. She wasn’t as slim as she had been when they had married three years ago, but even Arthur had admitted he preferred the weight she had put on.

Why is he now disinterested in me?

Rebecca sighed. She had to face him. She couldn’t keep harbouring this fear that her husband was starting to lose interest in her body, in her. The door behind her flew open, and Rebecca watched Arthur come into the room in the mirror. He had a funny smile on his face and moved to meet her. Rebecca said nothing but smiled when her husband wrapped his hand around her from behind. He rested his hands on her huge belly and kissed her ear.

“Is something wrong? You look like something is wrong,” Arthur asked.

This was her chance to ask him why he was keeping away from her in bed. Rebecca opened her mouth to say it but decided this wasn’t the time. They could still talk all about it after the party. She shook her head.

“No, nothing is wrong, Arthie. I was just imagining how I would welcome your sister,” Rebecca said, using the opportunity to voice any worry she had.

“Don’t bother. You’ll see what I was talking about. You’ll be fine. I want both of you to feel at home. No one is ousting anyone,” Arthur said.

“What if she starts her –” Rebecca left her statement uncompleted.

Her point was proven, though.

“She’s not starting anything. And this is her house, Rebecca, just as much as it is yours,” Arthur said.

Rebecca pushed away his hands and walked towards the bed. It was rather distastefully apt of Arthur to remind her of that. She wasn’t trying to claim supremacy, but he put it like she came to usurp his sister from her position.

“I didn’t chase her away, Arthur. I didn’t even ask that you –”

Arthur’s kiss stole the rest of her words. Arthur had walked up to her as she spoke and kissed her fully on her mouth. He leaned into her and wrapped his arms around her waist. Rebecca felt her head weigh lighter.

“No, you didn’t,” Arthur said after breaking the kiss.

“I did what I felt was necessary to keep the love in our home. And by a stroke of luck, it seems my dear sister also found love in a county not so far away.”

Rebecca smiled. Even she couldn’t deny that it was only fair that Lady Teresa, despite how wicked she had been, found some comfort later in life.

Arthur walked towards the balcony and stood still, peering into the distance.

“And what is this I see?” Arthur said.

Rebecca walked to where Arthur was. She wasn’t as tall as him, so she moved closer to the balcony before she could see what he saw. It was a coach. It had stopped at the gate, and the gate was being opened for the coach to enter.

“I think our guests are here,” Arthur said.

Rebecca felt her heart lurch. It was time to face her fears, or her fear since it was a living breathing fear. Arthur stretched and took her hand, turning her to face him. It seemed the anxiety was evident on her face because he stared into her eyes and decided she needed more talking to.

“You don’t need to worry, Rebecca. It’ll be fine,” he said.

Rebecca didn’t respond. She took a deep breath and buried her hand under Arthur’s armpit.

“I hope it will be,” Rebecca muttered under her breath.

If Arthur heard, he gave no reply. As they came out of their bedroom, Ethan was also being led out of his by his maid.

“Mama,” Ethan said.

Rebecca was delighted to see her son. She bent and picked up her son, but he was soon collected by his father. Arthur never wanted her carrying anything or doing anything stressful.

“How was he this morning?” Rebecca asked Miss Palace.

“Bright as a daisy,” Miss Palace replied, stretching to pull Ethan’s cheeks playfully.

Ethan was meanwhile telling his father all about how Miss Palace had used cold water to bath him that morning. Rebecca watched as father and son chatted and walked down the stairwell, son in father’s arms. She went across the foyer into her daughter’s room and as expected met Harriet in a confused state.

Her daughter had discovered a new problem, her choice of best colour. She couldn’t make up her mind if it was blue or pink. This expanded to a really serious problem because it meant she didn’t know which dresses to wear or which shoes to pick or any other problem that could arise from a mind so easily confounded on issues such as colour. Rebecca had given up on explaining to her daughter that it didn’t matter what she wore. What mattered was that she looked good.

“Mother, help me pick one. Which of these dresses do you think fits today best?” Harriet asked.

Rebecca picked a pink one and helped Harriet into it. Harriet was growing into a carbon copy of Countess Eleano. They had the same shape of face, the same ears, and definitely the same eyes. Only their hair seemed to differ.

Rebecca managed to hasten her daughter up such that they were downstairs in half the time they would normally have been. Rebecca didn’t want to start on a bad note with the new Lady Teresa.

Rebecca walked down the stairs, watching her daughter as she practiced walking with poise and grace that her governess had been teaching her. It was a funny image, and Rebecca just managed to hold in her laughter. When she got to the bottom of the stairs, she saw Lady Teresa right away.

“Rebecca, you look ravishing,” Lady Teresa said, using a high pitched voice Rebecca had never thought she was capable of.

Lady Teresa looked different too. She was in a white gown that seemed round in the middle too. Rebecca realised her sister-in-law was also pregnant. She walked closer to Lady Teresa who opened her arms in an unlikely embrace. Rebecca didn’t know what to say. She walked awkwardly as Lady Teresa wrapped her hands around her.

“What a sight! Two pregnant women,” she heard Arthur say.

She turned her neck and gave her husband a stern look. Lady Teresa then stepped back and looked into Rebecca’s face with a huge smile. It was at that moment that Rebecca believed her husband. Even if Lady Teresa was pretending and was still an awful person inside, she would never be able to craft a smile that was so earnest.

*******

Rebecca rested her head on the wooden rest of her bed. Arthur sat on the other side of the bed and was talking excitedly. It was obvious he had loved how the day went.

“I told you Teresa had changed; do you believe me now?” he said.

Rebecca nodded. Arthur had been very correct. She had been very careful around Lady Teresa throughout the day, but she had been shocked to her bones when Lady Teresa had walked up to her just before dinner. Countess Eleano had gone for her evening rest, and Arthur had followed Mr Victor into the garden to discuss political matters. It had been she and Lady Teresa alone on the patio outside the house.

“How are you, really?” Lady Teresa asked her.

Rebecca, still unsure of Lady Teresa’s ploy, looked straight at her and answered her with a rather frank piece of her mind.

“Do you really care, Lady Teresa? Or are you just doing all this to impress Arthur?”

Lady Teresa smiled. It was a lively sweet smile that Rebecca still wasn’t used to seeing on her face.

“I wish you to meet my husband one day, Horace. Horace saw past my bitterness and helped me out of my shell,” Lady Teresa said.

Rebecca had not known whether to believe or not.

“If you are still angry at me for all the deeds I have done to you and my brother, then I cannot blame you. You do have a right because I know I cost you and Arthur much more than what love should cost. But I am sorry, Countess. I really am,” she said.

Rebecca had closed her eyes and felt all the bitterness and anger she still felt for Lady Teresa wash away. She had not achieved anything with her malicious actions. Rebecca felt Lady Teresa’s gloved hand move on top of hers. She opened her palm and allowed their fingers to interlock.

Rebecca returned her mind to the present and responded to her husband.

“Yes, I do. I really do,” she said.

Arthur then snuck into the space beside her, kissed her briskly on her lips and lay down to sleep. She waited for a short while to pass before speaking up.

“Is that all you are going to do?” she said.

She felt Arthur turn beside her.

“What do you mean?” Arthur asked, turning to face her.

“I mean, why have you been keeping away from me?”

Arthur sat up. There was a confused stare on his face.

“I don’t understand,” he replied.

“We have not made love in a while, Arthur,” Rebecca replied, seeing that Arthur really didn’t understand what she was saying.

Arthur broke into a smile. He shook his head and pulled Rebecca closer to him.

“It’s nothing, Rebecca. I noticed that you tire easily when you are so far gone,” Arthur said, referring to her pregnant state.

“I felt I was helping you. I didn’t want to stress you,” Arthur said.

Rebecca smiled. She had been so silly.

“I am never too tired to make love,” she whispered.

“I know that now,” Arthur said, crawling closer to her.

He placed his hand under her chin, turning it up to meet his mouth as his mouth enveloped hers in an eager kiss. Arthur placed his hand behind her sleeping gown and loosened its fastening. He pulled the gown gently off her shoulders and out under her. Quickly shedding himself of his short breeches, Arthur crawled up to meet his naked wife.

Rebecca chuckled as Arthur wrapped his lips around her breasts which were heavy due to her pregnancy. Their tips were even more sensitive, and Rebecca was squirming under his ministrations as he dragged softly on her nipples. She had missed him, missed the taste of his skin and the way her body reacted whenever Arthur touched her. She missed the feel of his hardness and how he claimed her when he took her.

“Take me,” she told Arthur.

She wanted him in her. In her belly was a fire that only Arthur could douse, and her thighs were already wet with expectation.

“With pleasure,” Arthur said.

He turned her around such that she faced the bed and raised her buttocks up gently. She yelped when he swiped his fingers between the lips of her crotch, hitting the bud at the top and making her heart start to race. And when he finally took her, Rebecca burst into soft laughter as the pleasure reminded her of the beautiful feeling of fullness that Arthur gave to her. His strokes were slow and gentle – a result of his concern for her pregnancy, Rebecca was sure. She couldn’t stop the soft moans that escaped her throat as Arthur thrust fully into her, filling her and causing her to gasp for air. Arthur kept stroking, and it seemed he would not stop.

She felt the current move through her, riding on the wave of every thrust, and slowly she knew her climax approached her. When Arthur put his hands around her and grabbed her by the sensitive nodes of her breasts, she couldn’t hold the climax in anymore. The force was shattering and burst through her till she felt she couldn’t take it anymore. Arthur wasn’t done though and he kept stroking, causing climax after climax until Rebecca was moaning loudly. And when he came, it was a flooding that accompanied another hard climax. Rebecca turned and threw her arms around her husband, revelling in what was a fruit of their love.

“Thank you, Arthur,” she whispered.

“For what?” Arthur asked.

For everything.

Rebecca didn’t respond. She was with the love of her life. She didn’t need to speak. She wrapped her hands around his neck and laid her head on his chest, embracing the sleep that slowly crept in.

THE END

    1. I was very happy to see how Rebecca and Arthur were enjoying their new life together, as they shared their love with their children and Teresa. I admit that I was very surprised to see how much Teresa had changed for the better. I do like happy endings… so I’m glad she did. This was a GREAT story full of excitement, love, and tension. A GREAT READ!!

      1. I enjoyed rebecca and Arthurs story and very surprised with Teresa just could not see her changing what she had been all her life and that was horrible

    2. I loved the story and the characters, it was so good to see how love can change a person like Lady Theresa. I was so engrossed in the story I read it in a couple of hours. T hank you for another great book.

    3. Fantastic story and exciting epilogue with Rebecca and Authur. That they had a so. And another on the way was heart warming and added to their own
Legacy. The love that they have for each other are something that we all want in life. The fears that they each have is so normal for each of us even when the time period is much different in regards to scandal and society. That Arthur stood up to that pressure but followed his heart ❤️ is the best part.

    4. I’m sorry to be disappointed with this short epilogue because I enjoyed the book. The speed of the forgiveness was totally unbelievable to me. I found myself laughing at the end knowing that no human could that easily forgive what the sister did. For God’s sake, they took 6 years to come back together! They didn’t trust anything throughout most of the book, but a genuine smile and the worst apology I ever heard and all is forgotten! I did like the book though!

      1. Thank you for your message, my dear!

I really appreciate your kind and honest feedback! It’s always welcome, as it helps me become better and better.

I will definitely keep your comments in mind and be more careful about such issues for my future stories. I’m glad you enjoyed the story though 🙂

    5. The trials, agony, the convoluted familial relationships, lead readers to page turning after page turning, reaching for the denouement they are sure is just beyond the next page, and the happy ending they expect. But how can there be with so much to resolve? I enjoyed this beautifully crafted novel and I know your readers will too!

    6. I loved the story. I cannot believe how someone could be so destructive to someone else. Arthur seemed to be entirely clueless through the whole story. In life I can see how it may really happen when someone thrives on destroying someone else’s life to feel good about themselves and the power they have by doing this.

    7. I enjoyed the book very much with all its up and downs. I do not understand your use of everyone being tired and sleepy all the time. For a while I thought the sister might be poisoning Arthur—even the mother.
The epilogue was short and let everyone have a happy ending. As a another reviewer said it was very contrived. The evil sister would not be so easy to forgive.

      1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, dear Mary. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

    8. Loved this story which included jealousies, trials & tribulations & enduring love but hated the older sister I understood her frustrations with her younger brother inheriting the title but what she did to a young woman, her brother, her niece, her mother & father was unforgivable, I would have given this story a 10 but the easy forgiveness of Teresa knocked it to an 8 but the love scenes brought it back to a 9.5 😀
I also mention love scenes as I think all books of this genre should notify steam levels as some readers unlike me are not comfortable with them & would probably prefer to know there are steamy scenes or the steam level.

      1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, dear! I am thrilled you enjoyed the book and fully support notifying readers on steaminess in advance, just in case the steam level of the release is not something they are comfortable with. I have long now switched to clean releases, but it’s a great reminder anyways, so thank you!

  1. Wonderful story,I enjoyed meeting eveyone, but I loved the little girl.and it moved very good,I love books like that. And I cried a lot, which makes it very, very good book.cam

  2. I just finished it this morning and now finished reading the extended epilogue and loved it. You really emphasized in the story of what a wicked, jealous women could cause so much trouble for so many people. The epilogue shows what love could do to erase the bitterness and jealousy from her.
I really did enjoy the romance between Rebecca and Arthur, their secrets, and then how the love blossomed and how Arthur got rid of his sister. Great plot, great writing leading to a great novel!

  3. You had so many emotions stirred up in me; anger, compassion, love and forgiveness. Anger showed up in the middle of the story and I didn’t know if I was wanting to continue but compassion showed up and then came forgiveness. It can right all wrongs and it was evident in this story. What an excellent story that applies as much today. Thank you for a great book!

  4. I experienced a lot of different emotions while reading this great book; anger, compassion, love and forgiveness. This was a point after a third of the way into the book that I was so angry I didn’t know if I wanted to finish it. But perseverance won and I was glad I did. Compassion, love and forgiveness came later which gave it 360 degree twist. Anger was wiped away when the heart opened and let the three heart emotions overpower and prevail. It’s about love being able to right wrongs and that happens through frogiveness. What a great story that applies even in today’s messy world. Thanks for a wonderful book!

    1. Thank you so much for your detailed feedback and thorough analysis, my dear. I’m really glad you stayed and finished the story, and I’m even happier you liked it! Enjoy your weekend dear Barb!

  5. A great story. I really enjoyed reading the story. In parts of the story s I thought Arthur needed to be stronger but it all worked out in the end and I’m glad he and Rebecca has their happy ending. I’m glad also that Teresa was able to have a happy ending Love conquers all it seems

  6. i enjoyed the story line but I feel there were too many pages of gratuit sex scenes. Otherwise a delightful story.

  7. Wonderful book full of love and faithfulness to true ideals. I could imagine from the descriptions the clothing and homes.

  8. What a wonderful love story. The passion was so strong between these two that it was hard to contain. Heartache finally brought them to a happy ending for everyone. Henrietta Harding’s books always keep me entertained.

  9. Thank you for a great book, I really enjoyed the epilogue and am so glad this story had such a beautiful ending, I have read some of your other books and am never disappointed

  10. What a great read! I really loved this story, from the beginning to this extended epilogue. I thought that although his sister always seemed to indicate that Arthur was a weak man, I saw him as a strong person. Eventually, he made the wise decision to ban her from the estate, the county, even. It turned out for the best for all of them. And I loved Rebecca and Harriet. Beautiful characters, all of them. I’m looking forward to reading all of Ms. Harding’s other works!

  11. I loved Rebecca but Arthur was entirely too weak. He had been raised to be an earl. Too much of the book was spent on him looking foolish.

  12. I thought Arthur was too weak a character and found the forgiveness of Teresa and the Mom too quick. They didn’t just cost couple 6years but also the daughter 5 years! I did read it straight through because they (Arthur and Rebecca) had such a magnetic and passionate love for each other! It was an enjoyable read

  13. When I have a big lump in my throat and then proceed to cry, feeling all the emotions the main characters are going through and went through after 6 years of separation, I know I’m reading a very good book, a book worth my precious time. Arthur and Rebecca’s love story had me rooting for a happy ending and much more. It did not disappoint. This is what a second chance romance is all about. The extended epilogue completed it sweetly and contentedly although, the change in Teresa was a bit of a surprise. I expected something bad would have happened to her when banished from the Earl’s estate for her conniving and evil ways. Well done Ms. Harding! Very well done indeed.

  14. A love tale with surprise which contained a happy ending for all. This was another one of the books in which I could not put down, until I reached the end. A strong Love story of young love, lasting love, and finally family love with forgiveness.

  15. I enjoyed the story very much . What a shame Rebecca and Arthur had to lose so much time because of his vindictive sister . I’m so glad things turn out well for them. I really would like to see how characters would fi ttinto another story.?

  16. Loved this book. Couldn’t stop reading and as a result, my laundry still isn’t done. Oh well!! I must finish my chores before I start another of your novels. Thank you and keep writing.

  17. I have read all three books ,in fact book rwo I had read before but I read it again, that’s how good her books are . You love, you cry (a lot ),and they are hard to put down. Now that is what I call a good book. Cam.

  18. Loved the story!
Didn’t expect these two love birds to separate for 6yrs and lead lives away from each other only to be brought back together and find love again …..lost years
I wish more stories were written like this one ……

  19. Wow what a story. I loved it. I was surprised when I found out the baby was the Earls. Just as surprised to see
his sister had chaged. Very good story. Thank you ,Susan

  20. Wow what a story. I loved it. I was surprised when I found out the baby was the Earls. Just as surprised to see
his sister had chaged. Very good story. Thank you ,Susan

  21. This story was amazing with all the characters going though some hard times. But in the end brother and sister got there happy ending. You amazed me with the story. Can’t wait till I read your next one.

  22. I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the characters even Lady Teresa. It made the story more real. Knowing what happened to every character (except for Wendy) was a great addition to the book.
Keep writing and I’ll keep reading.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, my dear Leoda! I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

  23. Enjoyed the book but felt he should have acted more strongly towards his sister and was surprised at how she was suddenly turned from someone so evil to being so nice

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, dear Elsie. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

  24. I enjoyed reading this story. Love should last a lifetime. It’s amazing how both the Earl and Rebecca were pawns of Theresa. This story got a little bogged down with all of Theresa’s attempts to Mary off her brother. So glad that the extended epilogue was there to finish off the story.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, dear Donna. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

  25. I appreciate that this was not another story of endless balls, soirées, garden parties, embroidering, pianofortes, and a chit bent on independence until she found a dashing earl.
I loved Harriet’s strength, and was exasperated with Arthur’s cluelessness, especially about Harriet.
Teresa got what she “needed” which was an estate to lord over. All in all, Henrietta, you crafted a great story.
