The grand estate of Lord Taylor had never looked more splendid, draped in garlands of white and pink roses that wafted a delicate fragrance through the air, mingling with the laughter and chatter of well-dressed guests. It was a perfect day for a wedding, the sky a cloudless blue, as if the heavens themselves had paused to gaze down in approval.

In a corner of the manicured gardens, under a marquee festooned with ribbons and blooms, Tabitha Hillsburgh stood beside her husband, Matthew, the Duke of Hillsburgh. She watched, her eyes sparkling with joy, as their daughter, Elaine, played tag with her younger siblings. Elaine had grown into a strikingly beautiful young woman, her laughter ringing clear and true, a sound that never failed to warm Tabitha’s heart.

“Look at them,” Tabitha murmured to Matthew, nodding towards the children. “Can you believe how quickly they’ve grown?”

Matthew followed her gaze, his green eyes softening with a tender light that Tabitha had come to cherish. “It feels like only yesterday Elaine was barely reaching my knee, and now she’s the bell of any ball she attends.”

“And to think, she’s taken to our little ones as if they were her own,” Tabitha added, her hand resting on her slightly rounded belly, the early sign of their third child. “She’s a wonderful big sister.”

Matthew smiled and wrapped an arm around Tabitha’s shoulders, pulling her close. “She has a good example in her mother,” he said, kissing the top of her head gently. “You’ve made this family what it is, my love.”

Tabitha blushed at the compliment, leaning into his embrace. Their life together had blossomed into something neither of them could have anticipated in those early, uncertain days of their marriage. Now, surrounded by the fruits of their love, Tabitha felt a profound sense of fulfillment.

Their attention was soon drawn to the center of the festivities as Bridgette and Lord Taylor stepped into view, ready to exchange vows. The couple stood hand in hand, smiles wide, eyes alight with the promise of a future together. Bridgette, once just Tabitha’s confidante, now shone in her own right, radiant in a gown of ivory silk that flowed elegantly to the ground.

“It’s wonderful, isn’t it?” Tabitha whispered. “After everything Bridgette and I have been through, to see her this happy…”

“It gives one hope,” Matthew agreed, watching the ceremony with a reflective gaze. “Hope that no matter the trials we face, there’s a chance for happiness at the end of it.”

As the officiant spoke the traditional words, the crowd grew hushed, hanging on the moment when Bridgette and Lord Taylor would seal their union with a kiss. When they finally did, cheers erupted, and petals rained down upon the newlyweds, a colorful blessing on their new life together.

After the ceremony, as guests mingled and offered their congratulations, Matthew’s sister, Miriam, caught Tabitha’s eye from across the lawn. Miriam was engaged in a light, flirtatious conversation with a dashing duke, her laughter carefree and genuine—a stark contrast to the pained shadow that had once marred her features in the wake of her own romantic disappointments.

“Miriam seems to have finally found her footing again,” Tabitha noted, nodding towards her sister-in-law.

Matthew glanced over, a look of brotherly pride crossing his face. “Indeed, she has stopped chasing after what was never meant to be and started looking at what could be. It’s good to see her happy.”

As the afternoon waned into evening, the golden light of sunset cast a warm glow over the estate, turning the scene into something out of a fairy tale. Tabitha felt Matthew’s hand tighten around hers, and she looked up into his eyes, finding there an echo of her own deep contentment.

“Shall we take a moment for ourselves?” Matthew suggested with a mischievous grin, nodding towards a secluded path lined with flowering hedges.

Tabitha laughed, a sound of pure happiness. “Lead the way, my duke.”

Hand in hand, they stole away from the crowd, down the path that meandered through the lush gardens. The noise of the celebration faded behind them, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant calls of evening birds.

As they reached a particularly dense thicket of hedges, Matthew drew Tabitha against him, his hands roaming over her back, pulling her close. The intensity in his gaze took her breath away.

“I love you, Tabitha,” he murmured, his voice low and full of emotion. “More with every day that passes.”

“And I you,” Tabitha replied, reaching up to thread her fingers through his hair. “You are my heart, Matthew.”

Their lips met in a kiss that was both a seal of past promises and a pledge for the future—a kiss deep and slow that spoke of years of love and the unshakeable bond they had formed. It was a kiss that said, without words, that no matter what lay ahead, they would face it together, with their love as their strongest guide.

As they finally parted, cheeks flushed and breathless, Tabitha leaned her forehead against Matthew’s, a serene smile playing on her lips.

“Let’s not go back just yet,” she whispered.

“Anything you wish, my love,” Matthew replied, his voice tender. And in the encroaching twilight, enveloped by the scent of roses and the soft evening air, they remained there, hidden away in their own little world, where every ending was happy, and every moment a beginning.

As the evening stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky, the soft strains of a string quartet filled the air, inviting guests back to the dance floor. Matthew and Tabitha, arm in arm, re-joined the festivities, their hearts light and spirits high. The gardens were now illuminated by a thousand fairy lights, casting a magical glow over the entire scene.

The bride and groom opened the dance floor, their movements graceful and filled with an effortless joy. Watching them, Tabitha felt a surge of happiness for her friend. Bridgette had found her true match in Lord Taylor, a man who loved her for all that she was and all she could be.

“It’s like watching a dream come true, isn’t it?” Tabitha remarked, her eyes never leaving the dancing couple.

“It is,” Matthew agreed. He glanced down at her, his smile tender. “And to think, we’re living our dream too.”

Tabitha squeezed his hand in response, her heart full. The music swelled, a lively tune that beckoned even the most reluctant to the dance floor. With a playful bow, Matthew led Tabitha into the throng of dancers. They moved together seamlessly, as if the music was made for them, their bodies remembering the familiar rhythm of their many dances together.

As they twirled and laughed, Tabitha’s gaze wandered over the guests, stopping on her daughter Elaine. Elaine was dancing with a young man whose eyes rarely strayed from her face, his admiration clear. Tabitha remembered the young man from a recent gathering; he was the son of a viscount, well-regarded and kind-hearted. It seemed he had been utterly captivated by Elaine, much to the delight of everyone who knew her story and wished her every happiness.

“Elaine seems to have caught a certain gentleman’s eye,” Tabitha whispered to Matthew as they danced past her.

Matthew followed her gaze and chuckled softly. “It appears so. He’s a good match for her—respectful and earnest. It’s all a father could hope for his daughter.”

Their dance continued, the night air filled with the sounds of laughter and music. As the song ended, they paused to catch their breath, their cheeks flushed with exertion and joy.

“Shall we take a walk?” Matthew suggested, nodding towards the quieter paths that wound around the estate’s extensive gardens.

“I’d love nothing more,” Tabitha replied, her arm slipping through his as they strolled away from the dance floor.

The path took them past blooming flower beds and under arches of roses, the fragrance sweet and strong in the night air. They spoke of little things, the details of their daily life, the children’s latest escapades, the books they had read and shared. It was a simple conversation, yet it held all the depth of their shared life and love.

As they rounded a bend, the sounds of the party grew fainter, and they came upon a small pond, its surface still and reflecting the moonlight. They stopped, and Matthew turned to Tabitha, taking both her hands in his.

“Do you remember,” he began, his voice low, “the first time we walked together like this, in the gardens of my estate?”

“How could I forget?” Tabitha replied with a smile. “It was a turning point for us. I think it was when I truly began to hope that we might make something real from our arrangement.”

Matthew nodded, his eyes deep pools of emotion. “I was so guarded, so afraid to let go of the past. But you, Tabitha, you showed me how to live again, to love again.”

He lifted her hand to his lips, kissing her fingers gently. “And now, here we are, years later, stronger and more in love than I could ever have imagined.”

Tabitha’s eyes glistened with unshed tears, her heart swelling with the love she felt for this man. “I love you, Matthew, more deeply every day.”

“And I you, my dearest Tabitha, more than words can ever express.”

They stood by the pond, the world around them forgotten, lost in each other’s eyes. It was a perfect moment, one of many they had shared, and would continue to share, in the tapestry of their life together.

Breaking the spell, Tabitha playfully tugged on his hand. “Come, let’s not keep Bridgette and Lord Taylor waiting too long. We wouldn’t want to miss the cutting of the cake.”

Laughing, they headed back to the party, their steps light, their hearts full. As they walked, Matthew leaned in, whispering promises of the future, of all the days and years to come, each word a vow of love and commitment.

And Tabitha knew, with a certainty that filled her entire being, that whatever challenges they might face, their love would see them through, just as it had brought them to this beautiful, star-filled night.

As Matthew and Tabitha made their way back to the celebration, the night sky seemed to sparkle with a particular clarity, each star winking as if in acknowledgment of the joy that filled their hearts. They rejoined the party just in time for the cake cutting, which proved to be a grand affair. The cake itself was a towering confection, layers of delicate sponge adorned with intricate icing roses that matched the floral decorations of the wedding.

Bridgette and Lord Taylor, glowing with happiness, stood hand in hand as they made the first slice, their guests clapping and cheering. Tabitha watched with a fond smile, her thoughts drifting to her own wedding day, the memory now tinged with the golden hue of nostalgia and deep affection.

After the cake had been served, and the guests were milling about with plates of the sweet treat, Matthew excused himself for a moment to confer with the band. When he returned, his eyes were alight with mischief. “Would you honor me with a dance, my lady?” he asked, offering his hand with a flourish.

Tabitha laughed, delighting in his playful mood. “I thought you’d never ask,” she replied, placing her hand in his as they stepped onto the dance floor. The music swelled, a slow, romantic piece that lifted the spirits and tugged at the heartstrings. They moved together in perfect harmony, their bodies close, their movements a testament to the years they had spent learning each other’s rhythms.

As they danced, Tabitha felt a wave of gratitude for the life they had built. The trials they had faced seemed now to be mere stepping stones that had led them to this point of unshakeable unity and mutual respect. She leaned her head against Matthew’s chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart, a sound that spoke of home and endless comfort.

The dance ended too soon, yet the warmth between them lingered as they walked off the dance floor, their arms around each other. They paused at the edge of the gathering to watch Elaine once again. She was now deep in conversation with the young viscount, her expression one of animated interest.

“Elaine seems quite taken,” Tabitha remarked, her voice soft with maternal affection.

Matthew nodded, watching his daughter with a protective yet approving eye. “He’s a good man. His father and I have spoken at length. He respects her, and more importantly, he makes her laugh.”

“That’s all we can ask for, isn’t it? For our children to find happiness,” Tabitha said, squeezing his hand.

“Yes, and to think, we have this little one still to introduce to the world,” Matthew replied, his hand resting gently on her belly. Tabitha’s heart fluttered at the thought of their growing family, a tangible symbol of their love and commitment.

The evening wore on with more dancing and laughter, the joy palpable in the air. As the final dance was called, Matthew whisked Tabitha away once more, both of them laughing as they tried to keep up with the lively tune. Around them, the guests joined in, the dance floor alive with the celebration of love and new beginnings.

Later, as the party began to wind down and guests started to make their farewells, Tabitha and Matthew took a moment to themselves, walking hand in hand through the quieter parts of the garden. The air was cool now, the sky a deep velvet blue, the first hints of dawn whispering at the horizon.

“We should head back soon,” Matthew said, though his tone suggested reluctance.

“In a moment,” Tabitha replied, stopping to stand under a canopy of stars. “Let’s just enjoy this peace a little longer.”

Matthew wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. “Whatever you wish, my heart,” he murmured into her hair.

They stood together, the silence comfortable, the night wrapping around them like a soft blanket. It was a moment of perfect peace, a breath in time that spoke of past struggles and triumphs, of challenges overcome and joys celebrated.

“This,” Matthew said, his voice low and full of emotion, “this is what it’s all about, isn’t it? These moments, this family, our love.”

“Yes,” Tabitha agreed, her voice equally soft. “This is everything.”

As they turned to head back, their hands entwined, their steps slow and unhurried, Tabitha knew with a certainty that filled her with warmth, that whatever the future held, they would face it together, their love a beacon that would guide them through any storm. And in that knowledge, there was an immense, indescribable peace—a peace that promised not just a lifetime, but an eternity of happiness.

As the first light of dawn began to streak across the sky, painting it with hues of pink and orange, Matthew and Tabitha made their way back towards the manor. The laughter and music of the night had quieted down, leaving behind a serene calm that enveloped the estate. They walked slowly, enjoying the crisp morning air and the soft whisper of the breeze through the trees.

As they approached the manor, Tabitha paused, looking back at the gardens where Bridgette’s wedding had taken place. “It’s been a perfect day,” she reflected aloud, her voice filled with contentment.

“It has,” Matthew agreed, pulling her close for a moment. “And there are many more perfect days to come.”

They continued walking, reaching the steps of the manor just as the sun crested the horizon, bathing everything in a gentle golden light. Matthew helped Tabitha up the steps, his hand protective at her back.

Inside, the house was quiet, the guests having retired to their rooms after a night of celebration. Matthew and Tabitha decided to find a quiet sitting room where they could watch the sunrise together.

Finding an ideal spot by a large window, they settled into comfortable chairs. Matthew took Tabitha’s hand in his, bringing it to his lips for a gentle kiss. “I’ve been thinking,” he began thoughtfully, “about how much has changed since we first met. How much we’ve overcome and all the joys we’ve experienced.”

Tabitha smiled, squeezing his hand. “Our journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but I wouldn’t change a single thing. Each challenge has brought us closer, made our bond stronger.”

“Yes, it has,” Matthew agreed. He looked out the window, where the new day was dawning bright and clear. “And now, with another child on the way, our family growing, I feel a sense of… completeness. Like every part of my life is exactly as it should be.”

Tabitha leaned over, resting her head against his shoulder. “I feel it too,” she whispered. “A completeness, a peace I never imagined possible.”

Their conversation turned to news they had received just weeks before—a brief letter informing them that Rosemary had remarried a lesser lord in Germany and seemed to have settled far from their lives. “It seems she has found a new path, hopefully one that brings her peace,” Matthew remarked, the relief evident in his tone.

“And Cassius?” Tabitha asked, a note of concern threading through her words.

“Arrested, last I heard, for fraud and more of his nefarious schemes,” Matthew responded, his face darkening for a moment before he shook off the displeasure. “Let’s not dwell on him today. Today is for joy, for new beginnings.”

As the sun rose higher, filling the room with light, Matthew stood and extended his hand to Tabitha. “Come, my love. Let’s go greet the day together, see what new joys it brings.”

Hand in hand, they left the room, their steps light, their hearts full. They walked out onto the terrace, where the morning air was sweet with the scent of blooming flowers. Around them, the estate was waking up, the first signs of life stirring as the world embraced the new day.

Matthew pulled Tabitha into his arms, and they stood together, looking out over the land that was their home. “Here we are,” he said, his voice full of wonder. “Together, with our family, in this beautiful place. It’s more than I ever hoped for.”

“It’s our forever,” Tabitha replied, resting her head against his chest.

And as they stood there, the world turning beneath them, Matthew knew that this was where he was meant to be. With Tabitha, with their children, with the future stretching out before them like a promise.

They watched the sunrise, the sky a canvas of colors, and Matthew felt a deep, abiding joy. He had found his place in the world, his purpose and his peace. And as he looked down at Tabitha, her face upturned to the light, he knew without a doubt that they had many years of happiness ahead of them. Years filled with love, laughter, and the quiet, steadfast warmth of the family they had built together.

So as the new day began, Matthew kissed Tabitha, a kiss that spoke of endless days to come, of love that would last through the ages. And in that moment, everything was perfect. They had found their happily ever after, and it was everything they had ever dreamed of and more.

THE END

    1. Great story! I don’t usually don’t read the extended epilogue but with this story I wanted to read it!

  1. Loved this story line, the fast tempo avoided lulls. You never repeated things, only when it helped to develop the story line.
I enjoyed having a married couple through most of the story, rather than at the end.

  2. Loved the story. Fast pace with the villians you expect to cause trouble It ended perfect accept I wondered out of the children they had how many were boys?

  3. Loved the book and have left a five star review.
However not so happy with the extended epilogue. It is rather repetitive and rather over sentimental. Why did you not tells us what Tabitha and Matthew’s children were i.e. boys or girls. You simply called them Elaine’s siblings! Did he get his male heir? That was the main reason for his second marriage after all!

  4. The story was good, the extended epilogue was way too full of “happily ever after” – monotonous. No real content & a waste of time.
Just the part of what happened to the everyone was necessary & not so much of the rest.

  5. I loved the story. Would have liked to have seen more interaction with their other children and of course, would have liked to know if they had an heir! They were such a loving couple but other than Elaine, there was no nurturing feeling about the rest of the children!
I love reading your books and look forward to the next one!

  6. Loved this story! It was very enjoyable to read! Like many others, I would have liked to know if any of their children were boys ! A Lord desperately needs an heir! I felt the extended epilogue was fairly useless! No interaction with their children except for Elaine . People with sooo much emotion would normally be very involved with their children!

    1. Thank you so much for reading and for your thoughtful message! I really appreciate your kind words and feedback—it means a lot. I’ll definitely keep your notes in mind for future stories!
