Chapter One

Wentworth Manor, Nottinghamshire

England

Tanvi Barchan sat at the balcony of the manor in Nottinghamshire. This was the fourth house she had lived in since her arrival in England. Yet she had no complaints. All of these houses had felt like home. From the Blackthorn’s townhouse to Amelia’s estate, her townhouse, and Alexander’s manor which was now their new home. When she had chosen to embark on this journey with her mistress sixteen months ago, she had had no idea what was in store for them. She had simply known that wherever Amelia was, she belonged there. There had been no reason to remain in Madras. Amelia had given her every reason to come with her. So far, she had no regrets – not one single regret. The months had brought a myriad of experiences for her. She had met new people, learned new cultures and traditions, and had seen life from a whole new point of view – and all of it was beautiful.

The best part of this journey had been watching her mistress and sister fall in love and get married. She had known Amelia since they had been only little girls. She had loved Amelia for so long. Had shared her joy and pain, had grieved with her when she had lost the only man she had ever loved – her father. It seemed only fitting that she had been here to witness her find love in the arms of another man. Tanvi knew that if she had missed out on this, she could never have forgiven herself.

Amelia had been so worried about moving to England, and so had she. However, it seemed that their lives had only truly just begun. Her mistress now had a purpose, people to lead, and a family. And she, well, she was no longer Tanvi, the handmaiden – she was now Tanvi, the Duchess’s lady-in-waiting. Her English had improved – her lady had said so herself, and her life had too. She was happier here. The people loved her as much as they loved their Duchess, and accepted her just as much. She was even happier for the beautiful family Amelia now had. Nevertheless, despite all of this, she could not stop herself from feeling a twinge of wistfulness.

Perhaps, it was seeing her lady so joyful, watching the life Alexander had created for them, the love he showered her with, how she basked in it, and showered him in return. Tanvi had had that once. The young, naïve girl she had been had believed that an English officer would choose an Indian over his refined English lady. She had believed that he truly loved her, had taken those words dearly to heart and had dwelled on them. Oh, when he had promised to marry her and painted the beautiful world they would make with their babies, she had smiled, her heart at peace. She had believed that indeed, all of those dreams would come true.

How foolish she had been. She should have known that love like that did not happen to a lowly maid like her. It did not matter how often Amelia tried to make her feel like she was more – she had always known that her sister’s words did not change the truth. How could Francis have seen any different? Perhaps, if she had not believed his words of love, if she had not dared to hope, she would never have fallen in love with him. If she hadn’t, the power to hurt her would never have been given to him. It never would have been his.

Alas, she had believed, had dared and the consequences she had to bear for her foolishness, was the hurt she still nursed in her heart.

Two years – it had been almost two years since she last set her eyes on Francis. She remembered it all like it had been only yesternight. She had hoped that the pain would numb with time – it had, but it still hurt every time she remembered it. She wished it wouldn’t.

Laughter from the field where her lady and her lord were reached her, bringing her out of her thoughts. Amelia threw flower petals at Alexander and broke into a run. He naturally gave chase. He soon caught up with her and tackled her to the ground, making certain that he shielded her with his body and took the brunt of the fall. She fell with her back on his chest, her now protruding belly facing the sky. It was such a beautiful sight to behold. The household staff divulged that the Duke had never been this way with his late wife. Everyone was glad to see this side of him.

Tanvi felt a presence by her side and looked up to see who it was. It was Henry, the butler. And he too was looking at the lovely sight, a huge grin on his face. He must have felt her eyes on him for he turned at that moment to look at her.

“Oh, My Lady.” He bowed his head slightly.

It all still felt strange to Tanvi. The formal address and the obeisance. Nevertheless, she was indeed now a lady and had to grow accustomed to it.

“A lovely evening, is it not, Henry?”

“Ahh. Yes, it is. It causes my soul to delight.”

“You wish to speak to His Grace and My Lady?”

“Not at all. In fact, I have come for you.”

Her curiosity got piqued. What was it that needed her attention? “For me? Pray tell me, why?”

“There is a young man in the waiting hall, My Lady. He wishes to see you. He claims to be an old acquaintance.”

“A young man? An old acquaintance? I do not have any in England, Henry.”

“Eh. I thought as much, but he insisted. He says you shall recognise him the moment you set your eyes upon him.”

Hmm … strange. She knew no one who would have come all the way to Nottinghamshire to see her. Nevertheless, if this man insisted, then perhaps, he did know her.

“Alright then. Take me to him, Henry, please.”

“Of course, gladly.”

The walk to the waiting hall was quiet, but it was a comfortable silence. As Tanvi drew closer to the hall, a feeling of uneasiness began to stir in the pit of her stomach. It was unnerving, and it worried her. The reason for that became answered as soon as she reached the waiting hall and saw who it was. The man had his back turned to her, but she recognised him, anyway. Without a single doubt. The hair at the back of her neck stood, her stomach sank, and her heart flew to her throat.

Henry cleared his throat before proceeding with the announcement. “My Lady, Tanvi Barchan at your request, Mr. Birmingham.”

He turned at that moment, and it was confirmed. It was him.

His deep brown eyes met Tanvi’s blue, and she froze as she went back to that night, a year and a half ago.

Chapter Two

A Year and the half ago…

Madras, India

Tanvi Barchan smiled as the last gas lamp in the room breathed fire and came to life, its glow adding to the luminance that already abided in the room. She turned to take in the work of her hand and decided that indeed, it looked beautiful. In total, there were three gas lamps lit in the cosy room, even as the fireplace cackled alive with yellow and blue flames, chasing away the chill that the storm raging outside came with.

Many would consider the room too bright, but it was just as her mistress liked it – bright and warm, to keep her spirit up. After her appraisal of the room, her eyes finally settled on the petite frame snuggled up on the bed which sat in the middle of the room. Her mistress was covered in thick sheets from her toe up to her throat. The sight caused Tanvi to smile harder.

“You really do love the storms, don’t you?”

“Haann. I would take a cold night over a hot one, any day. The chill, you can chase away. But the heat? Dear Lord! It’s almost impossible!”

A chuckle escaped Tanvi’s lips at her mistress’s exclamation. It was no secret that Amelia Wright, as much as she loved Indian soil, had never been able to garner such affections for its dry, hot climate. And when she spoke with such emotions, the war between her maternal English accent and learned Indian accent became even more evident.

Amelia faked a frown as she heard Tanvi’s chuckle, narrowing her eyes for effect. “You make mockery of me, do you not?”

Tanvi gave into a helpless grin. Her answer was swift and honest. “No, never!”

“Good. I shall hate to think that you do,” Amelia replied, her brows wiggling mischievously. If the day was bright, it would have been easier to catch the twinkle in her eye.

“That would never happen, Amelia. How is it? Is the room warm and bright enough for you?”

“Haann, it is. You may go to bed now, Tanvi. I shall be fine.”

Relieved to hear that, for she too was eager to feel the soft mattress beneath her back after such a long day, she walked over to Amelia and placed a tender kiss on her cheeks.

“Goodnight, My Lady. Do not hesitate to call for me if anything be the matter.”

“I am more than capable for myself, Tanvi. If only you wouldn’t insist so much.”

“It is the work I have been employed to do. Do not deprive me the joy of rendering my services. More than that, I do enjoy caring for you. Now, I shall leave you to go to sleep. Dream beautiful dreams, My Lady.”

She turned to leave then, and Amelia said nothing until she was almost stepping out.

“You too, sister.”

Those words warmed her heart, and as she found her way to her room, she could not help thinking of how lucky she was indeed to be in service of a lady who considered her more friend and sister than maid.

As she reached her chamber, the chill she met caused her to halt in her steps, allowing the wave of shiver to rack over her. As soon as the shivers lost hold of her, she quickly went about lighting the wood in her fireplace. In no time, the wood crackled like Amelia’s had, and her room lit up with light from the only gas lamp she had. Unlike Amelia, she was accustomed to darkness and could hardly get good sleep if her room remained too lit.

After making certain that all was as she wanted it, she changed out of her day dress into her night dress and slipped under the covers. Despite how tired she was, sleep did not claim her as soon as her head hit the pillows. No, instead, she lay awake, listening intently to the sound of water hitting rooftops and earth, and the occasional thunder strikes that accompanied the torrent. It was strangely peaceful to her, all of it, and she could not help remembering the last time it had rained. She had been in the arms of the man she loved on that fateful afternoon, and he had loved every inch of her body.

Simply thinking of it all now aroused her, making her hot in places she had never known were capable of bringing pleasure to her. The kind of pleasure she had never felt before. Her thighs squeezed, causing her desire to heighten, as pleasure racked through her from the friction it brought. Oh, how she wished Francis was here. If he had not gone to the other town to run some errands, she might have considered the foolish thought of going to him in this downpour.

A noise caught her attention, drawing her out of her thoughts. She strained her ears to listen in, and she caught it again. It was coming from her window as if it was being hit by a stone. Mayhap, it was just the rain playing tricks on her – she thought, and decided to finally get some sleep.

Nevertheless, the noise did not halt and it kept coming in rhythmic pace. It was not long before she realised that she knew that rhythm. Could it be?

Unwilling to stall, she dragged her covers up, shot out of bed, and ran to the window to confirm her suspicions. As she pulled the curtains away and looked carefully, there he was, in the rain, his body shaking with cold. Her Francis, the man who owned her heart. But … what was he doing in the rain?

Quickly, not thinking about it twice, she ran out of her room and the cottage into the rain. No words were said between them as she took his hands and brought him into the house and to her room. Her Madam was fast asleep and so was the new Lord of the house. She was certain Amelia was too. No one would know of this.

It wasn’t until she had him wrapped with thick, warm blankets to chase away the cold that must have entered his body from all the time in the wicked rain that she spoke.

“Would you like to have a seat?”

He shook his head. His lips trembled as he tried to speak, and her heart broke for him. “I don’t want to drip all over your furniture. It would take days to dry.”

That was sensible enough. To think that in a time like this, he had thought of her. Silence reigned again until he stopped shivering. That was when she broke the spell.

“What are you doing here, Francis? Why did you come in such heavy downpour? I thought you were not going to return to Madras today.”

“I had to, and I had to come to see you, tonight. There was no way about it. There is something you need to know, Tanvi.”

Tanvi’s heart dropped as her stomach churned. Something was not right, and she instantly knew it. Francis was the cheery type. He had a smile on his face often, and his tongue jested so easily. Many loved him for how effortlessly he made them smile. However, his voice sounded gruff; his face was set in grim lines, and he wouldn’t hold her gaze. He loved looking into her eyes; he loved her eyes.

“What is it, Francis?” she dared to ask, willing her voice not to break.

There was a long silence, and he still could not bring himself to look at her. Dread began to fill her. Had the English people decided to send Francis back to England? Were his services no longer needed?

“Francis?” she called again. He finally spoke. When he did, his voice broke… the words they spoke, broke her heart.

“Tanvi, I am so sorry. I never meant for things to turn out this way. You must believe that. All that I have ever told you, of my love, of the future I hoped to have with you, they were all true, Tanvi. They still are.”

“What is this? What are you speaking about, Francis? Do you have to leave? Are your people sending you back to England? It’s okay. I can go with you. We can get married; Amelia will understand. She will give us her blessings.”

He shook his head. “No, Tanvi. You don’t understand. My parents … I have been corresponding with them. A letter arrived from home today. It is why I went to the other town. I should have told you, Tanvi. I simply assumed it wouldn’t matter.”

“You should have told me what? What did your parents say? What have they got to do with anything?”

He looked at her then with tears in his eyes. “Everything. I am betrothed to a certain Elizabeth Tusky. The betrothal happened even before we were born. I have never loved her or willed to marry her. I had hoped that with time, our parents would realise this and dissolve the arrangement, but I was wrong. I am to leave for England, tomorrow. I can no longer shirk off my responsibilities. I am the first heir to my father’s duchy, and it is my responsibility to marry for the sake of my people. The marriage would bring a lasting union between two great houses.”

Tanvi’s heart crumbled into a million pieces as her stomach sank. Her head spun, and she wondered if she had heard right. “Francis, what are you trying to say?”

He looked away again and took a deep sigh. “I leave Madras tomorrow, for good. My father ails, and I must answer the call of duty. I shall marry Elizabeth Tusky, and I may never return. I am sorry, Tanvi. I shall never be able to give you the life I promised, the life we dreamed of, the life you deserve. I do hope that one day you may be able to forgive me.”

Her legs wobbled, so she had to find her way to the bed for support. She sat, her head in her hands as tears streamed down her face. “Surely, you jest.”

“I too wish that was the case. But I would never, not with something as grievous as this. I am truly sorry, Tanvi. I knew I had to tell you this, myself. I shall miss you, goodbye.”

Tanvi wanted to scream, to run to him and hug him and beg him not to go. Yet she stayed frozen. All the strength in her deserted her, and she could not bring herself to lift a finger. She remained on the bed as he turned to leave, dropping the blankets she had given him, all the love they had shared. She remained frozen as he left her room. It was only when she heard the main doors close that she startled out of her state.

She got up and ran, out of the house, into the cold rain, calling his name, begging him to come back, but he was far gone, and no matter how hard she cried and begged, he never looked back.

She crumbled to her knees, tears merged with rain. He was far gone by the time she felt warm arms around her– so was her voice. She melted in Amelia’s arms as she dragged her back into the house. That night, when she finally fell asleep, she dreamt of Francis leaving her, over and over again.

Amelia had been wrong, sleep did not take the pain away.

Chapter Three

Present Day

Nottinghamshire

“He’s here again. It’s the fourth time this week, Tanvi. Alexander has managed to find out that he has been staying at the inn, down in the village. It is quite a distance. Alexander wants to have him as his guest, there are more than enough rooms. However, we do not want to disrespect your feelings.”

Tanvi wished she had the ability to block out some words from entering her ears. If she did, they would have no power to bring down the walls she had struck up long ago, to protect her heart. Walls that had begun crumbling since she set her eyes on Francis six days ago.

“Do not take me into account. I am only a lady-in-waiting. His Grace is free to make anybody his guest.”

“Do not be like this, Tanvi. At least, hear what he has to say. He has been all over England, trying to find you. He looks miserable. One can tell he is hurting. I know you are too. I also know that a huge part of you is dying to hear him out. Just give in to it.”

She said nothing, for she knew Amelia was right, and there was little she could do to deny those words. The chamber remained quiet until she heard Amelia get up and her footfalls begin to fade away. The door opened and closed, announcing that Amelia had left her to herself, as always. Suddenly tired, she released a deep breath.

What was she to do? Why was he here? Why now, after all this while? These were the questions she had been asking herself, and she knew she would not get answers unless she met with this man. Only, she was scared that if she saw him, spent more than a minute in his presence, she would be helpless to resist all of these strong feelings that he had awakened in her once again. Nevertheless, if he was determined to keep coming back, then she could not avoid him forever. It was best to get it over with.

She ruminated on the thought before finally reaching a decision. Then, concluding, she got up, set her clothing right, and headed for the drawing room where she knew Amelia would have received him. As she drew closer, her heart began to thud against her ribs, arousing fears of the ribs suffering cracks. She chided herself at the silly thought and willed herself to stay strong. Six days ago, the moment she had thawed from her frozen state, she had picked up her dress, turned, and ran. She hadn’t stopped until she had been safely locked in her chambers. Only then, had she broken down and cried.

She finally reached the drawing room to find Alexander and Amelia there. They were discussing something she did not care to know. The moment she stepped in, she could almost taste the tension and awkwardness that hung in the air. She kept her eyes on Amelia, not trusting herself to look at him, just yet. From the side of her eyes, she saw him rise.

Amelia and Alexander looked at her, questions in their eyes. She nodded. She would be fine with him alone – she hoped she would be. Trusting her answer, they rose, made their excuse and took their leave. The doors closed behind them seconds later, but Tanvi knew they would be at the door, listening in, ready to save her at the slightest indication that she needed saving. She took a deep breath and released it in a ragged stream. Then, she chose the seat furthest from him, and went to sit.

It was only when he too had taken his seat opposite her that she finally looked at him. A thousand emotions hit her at once. Hurt, pain, regret, want … she struggled to keep a rein on them all.

“Hello, Tanvi,” he said, breaking the silence. His voice, that voice she had missed so terribly, washed over her, causing her ache to deepen.

“Hello, Francis,” she replied, swallowing hard.

“It has been a long time.”

“Yes. A year and six months to be precise.”

There was a pause as he looked away. “I am sorry it took so long for me to find you.”

“What are you doing here, Francis? Why have you come all this way to look for me? Shouldn’t you be with your wife, your family? I am certain you must have had children by now.” She heard the venom in her voice, and when she saw him wince, she wished she had kept it away.

He looked back at her then. The emotion she saw in his eyes were deep waves. They threatened to pull her under. “No children, Tanvi. No wife either.”

Her eyes widened, then narrowed. “What do you speak of? What about Elizabeth, and the dukedom? Your responsibility?”

He smiled, but it was the saddest smile she had ever seen. “Your English is better now. You sound like a true Englishwoman.”

“I suppose living in their land does affect some things.”

His smile brightened. “Yes. I like it just as much as I loved your Madras tongue.”

“That does not answer my question.”

His face fell again. “No. It does not. There was no marriage, Tanvi. I did not marry Elizabeth. I could not do it.”

Those words rang in her ear, and her heart thudded harder, faster. “What? Why?”

He shook his head, still unable to look at her. “The four months I spent at sea, all I could do was think of you. The closer I drew to home, the more it felt like I was making the gravest mistake of my life – that I was leaving my true home behind. Still, I could not turn back. I managed to convince myself that those feelings would go away, and I could fulfil my duty to my people, to my family … I managed to deceive myself for long. But not long enough. For three months, I courted Elizabeth, and our marriage plans went on well. Alas, the morning of the wedding, I realised I could not go through with it. I owed Elizabeth more … and I could not give it to her. I wanted more than a marriage of misery, a marriage which I knew I would spend every day of, thinking of another woman. Elizabeth … she has a good heart. She did not deserve that. So, in front of the church and everybody, I said … I do not.”

Tanvi gasped. In her wildest imagination she never would have thought that something like this could happen.

“How … how did that go?”

He chuckled. It was as sad as his smile. “Well, my parents hoped I was jesting. They tried to get me to come back and continue the wedding. I refused. Hell was let loose. They threatened and raked, but my mind was made up. A week later, I was successfully disowned. My younger brother was named heir. He agreed to the marriage. He and Elizabeth have twin boys now.” He smiled then … “They are so happy together. They are consolation that I made the right choice. They write, often. Father … he fares better now but has handed over the duchy to Elias. My parents, they still wouldn’t have anything to do with me – but that’s fine.”

There was a pause. Tanvi was too lost for words to say anything, so she waited for him to continue.

“I got on the next ship I could get to Madras. All through the trip, it was thoughts of you that kept me going, Tanvi. I could not wait to see you … to hold you … to kiss you.” His gaze found hers again. “I knew that I had a lot to atone for. I despised myself more for hurting you, for not finding the strength to stand up to my parents before it was too late. Nevertheless, I could only hope that you would understand, and that you would forgive me and take me back into your loving arms. You have no idea how broken I felt when I arrived at Madras only to learn that you had left for England.”

His voice broke, and the ache in Tanvi’s heart hurt all the more. Every emotion he had felt, she heard in his voice.

“I could not leave so soon … especially since I left with little notice, the first time around. There was a lot to take care of, and I knew I was done with life in the service. I had saved up enough to offer us a good life together. I needed to tidy up everything before leaving again – this time, for good. I had just put all in order when Raleigh arrived and told me of all that had happened in my absence. So, with the piece of information I had, I returned to England. First, I went to his son in London … He told me of Amelia’s marriage to the Duke. He was the one who led me here, and the rest as they say, is history.”

As he finished, a tear dropped from his eyes. Watching it fall broke free the tears that Tanvi had been holding in. Francis got up at that moment and came to kneel before her.

He took her face in his hands, and the feel of his touch reminded her of just how much she had missed all of this. Him, his touch, his presence, his voice. Oh dear, she still loved him … she never stopped. Her tears flowed freely, and he tried to hush it away, even as his fell.

“I am so sorry, Tanvi. I understand if you never find it in your heart to forgive me. I am sorry I caused you so much pain, and I am sorry it took me this long to return to you. But I never stopped loving you. Not one single hour passed since that dreadful night, that I did not think of you. Not one.”

It was all too much for her to take, but after hearing his story, knowing that he too had suffered, and he had lost everything for her … how could she not forgive him?

Framing his face with her hands too, she broke into a sob and placed her forehead against his.

“Oh Francis, at first I was hurt … so hurt. Then, I became very angry. But the anger soon washed away and all that was left was hurt. And I kept hoping everyday that you would come back to me. Why didn’t you write? Say something? Believing that you were another woman’s husband, in her arms and living another dream, was the hardest part. It was.”

“Sshh. I am so sorry. All that is gone now. I promise to make it up to you. Just say that you forgive me. Tanvi, all those dreams, I want to bring them to reality. Just take me back, my love. I beg of you.”

Her heart swelled, and all the pain that she had carried in her slowly began to melt away. The ache began to soften until there was nothing left. Oh glory, how could she not forgive him? He was the only man she would ever love. She knew that now.

“Of course. I forgive you, Francis. I love you with all of my heart.”

His eyes widened, and his smile turned into a grin, then a chuckle, until they were both laughing, heartily. They recovered soon enough, and looking into her eyes, he confessed once more.

“Oh, Tanvi. You have made me so happy. I love you too. Everyday. Now, and always.”

The promise was sealed with a kiss, and Amelia and Alexander who had been listening entered the drawing room to cheer them on.

They were married a month later, and Francis’s brother and sister-in-law were in attendance. As a wedding gift, Alexander gave Francis a territory to be Viscount over. They accepted the gift graciously.

This is the story of how a lowly hand maiden from India became a Viscountess, and they all lived happily ever after.

    1. I really enjoyed the book after I finally got into it. Unfortunately beginning was so much about India that I kept lighting over things to get to the “Meat of the story”. I will be happy to review it

        1. An amazing read! I always live voraciously through the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about india, where my ancestors came from..a country with a rich and colourful culture and traditions.

    2. this was an amazing read the characters came to life as the words crossed my mind. I loved the romance and the hardships they all went through for their happily ever after

      1. What a delightful book ! The characters were very real to me–I felt as if I had known them. And I didn’t want it to end! This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I can’t wait to read another. Thank you for bringing me such joy!!!!!!

    3. Really enjoyed this book, you have a wonderful way of telling a story. Very well written, the characters are so believable. I couldn’t put it down until I finished. I would give this book 5 stars plus with no hesitation whatsoever!!!

    4. Was so unable to put this story to bed! Every chapter kept me so enthralled!
The epilogue made me weep with joy for Tavi! Thank you for quite an enjoyable read!

    5. This whole book was a spectacular love story, and the epilogue was the “icing on the cake!” The only loose end of the story was, “What happened to Tanvi?” I was so happy to read that my two favorite women in the story both received their “Happily Ever Afters”! I just finished reading this book, and I can’t wait to read it all over again!! In my mind, that’s the mark of a TERRIFIC story. Well Done Henrietta !!!

    6. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the India twist. Added a certain spice to the story. And I ALWAYS enjoy the extended epilogue. I like loose ends tied up!!!!!

    7. I loved this book. Not knowing how this would be resolved. Putting the book down at times as I could not read on, especially with the evil Ambrose and Amelia’s mother. How come though Amelia inherited as in other Regency books women are not allowed to inherit It all came right in the end with Tanvi. Lovely all characters found happiness.
Thank you so much for a heart warming story.

      1. Some titles can be passed via a daughter to her husband. Many, though, cannot. Amelia’s was apparently one where she was able to inherit the title.

    8. I loved this 📓 and story line. It was sad at times and exciting and romantic at others. It was so captivating I couldn’t put it down. Would highly recommend this 📓

    9. A wonderful beautiful story that shows the difference between love and sex.
Henrietta writes with the true meaning of love vice the “movie version” especially with Tavi and Francis. Cherish has become lost and replaced with sex.
Today not being cherished in a marriage, results in the easy way one depences with the other marriage partner not caring about the damages to those left behind.

Henrietta shows in both Amelia and Alexander and Tavi and Francis that marriage without true love and being cherished is simply legal way of having children.

Thank you for wonderful love scenes where love and cherishing trimuph s over athletic proformance and sex.

      1. I’m humbled, my dear!

I’m really grateful for your support and kind feedback!

I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed my story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

    10. I enjoyed the book and extended epilogue. It took a little bit of time to get past the part about India, but once I did, the story was quite interesting. The troubles that Amelia had to endure with her betrothed, her mother, and learning to be a duchess with all of its responsibilities were traumatic to say the least. But true love conquers all.

    11. I was hoping to hear more about Amelia and Alex and their family but I’m glad that Tanvi was able to reconnect with her love…..a definite good read from an exceptional author

    12. I truly enjoyed the story from beginning to end. I was hoping that the extended dialogue had more to do with Alexander and Amelia than beginning another story so soon. Nevertheless
, I found it a fun and relaxing read. Just what I needed.

    13. Very good story, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am happy that both girls came to a happy, romantic conclusion.
Looking forward to reading more of your books. As for the beginning of the book, I found India intriguing, not something to rush through.

    14. Enjoyed the story line very much! Having the characters grow through out the book was wonderful! I was bummed that Tanvi was being left out and kept trying to pair her with other characters. Glad she got her HEA in the end. There was mention of Amelia’s guards in the beginning. I thought Ambrose might kidnap Amelia and the guard would be needed but they weren’t mentioned again. Thank you for a wonderful read! I love your books!

    15. Loved the story line and all the back and forth of Amelia this is the kind of story that makes you keep reading and not put the book down. Keep up the excellent stories.

    16. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful book! I live vicariously though the pages of your books! I think historical romance is one of favorites to read. I have often said that I was born in the wrong era! I love reading about different parts of the world and cultures that are embedded in the lives of your wonderful characters! Keep them coming!! Love the extended epilogues!

    17. This is such a good story…. Amelia’s spirit reminds me of myself. I laughed till tears came when Alex declared his love for Amelia. Great story.

    18. I just have one thing to say, Amelia well written. She has backbone, spunk and a mind. So good to see. And also glad to fire.

    19. It was interesting to read about india and how they lived. I enjoyed reading about the lives of women at that time. I liked all the characters. They were real people. Enjoyed the love story.

    20. I have read several of your books but I have to admit this is the best so far! To have to endure so mush treason in ones life and especially in your own family. Was truly happy to see true love between the Duke and the Countess come to them despite her mother trying to interfere. Enjoyed the extended epilogue to find Tanvi find her lost Francis and for them to marry and be happy was thrilling!

    21. That was great, so glad Tanvi got her happily ever after. I enjoyed both stories, very much. Thank you for writing great books.

    22. I could not put down A Guardian for the Ravishing Countess and was pleased you offered the Extended Epilogue. I look forward to many evenings reading your other books in the series. Kudos.

    23. I really enjoyed this story. I loved how the Duke and Amelia acted like adults. You don’t always have to snipe at each other. Enjoyed the Indian part and being shaped by two cultures. Glad Han I had a happily ever after. I would have banished Mom until she made up with Raleigh😊

    24. First time ever reading a book of yours. With over 25 years of avid Romance reading under my belt, I’m unsure how that happened! Delightful story, characters and resolutions. Will definitely keep looking for more of your writings.

    25. Thank you. I enjoyed the book & the extended epilogue. I enjoyed reading a bit about India & thought the story of Amelia & Alexander was very good. I am happy that you chose to include these chapters about Tanvi. The story was unfinished without them.

    26. I enjoyed this novel immensely. I especially enjoyed the fiercely independent heroine Amelia & the way she dealt with Ambrose & her mum! Made for a delightful read…I wished it were longer.

    27. I enjoyed the book I read it in two days lately I have been reading Western. This was a good change.

      1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, dear Janice. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

    28. I enjoyed this book enormously I love reading of other countries and traditions the characters are easy to relate to I only wish they went back to the Indian dress occasionally.

      1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, dear Roberta. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

      1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, dear Freda. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

    29. This novel was wonderful! I particularly liked the extended ending
when Tanvi met up with her love
      Philip in England.
It reminded me of the ending to Jane
      Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility “
when the inheritance that was due Edward Ferrers was taken away because he insisted on marrying a lady that his mother felt was totally unacceptable. The inheritance. then went to Edward’s younger brother
      Robert.
Again this novel was truly wonderful,
      fantastic and indeed enjoyable.

    30. Ms Henrietta
A Guardian for the Ravishing Countess was a wonderful book and I especially enjoyed reading the extended epilogue as well. Amelia and Alexander are such a beautiful couple and then when Tanvi’s love Francis comes back to her it was so sweet. I greatly enjoyed reading this story .
      Very sincerely
      Sharon

  1. I have read a number of your books, but can honestly say that this one is by far my favorite. The characters were brilliant and the main characters of Alexander and Amelia were romantic, funny and sexy all at the same time and their chemistry alights each page. The extended epilogue gives a wonderful touch to the story, by letting us know what happens to Tanvi Amelia’s Mai’s and dearest friend. I truly loved this book and read it one sitting.

  2. This was the sweetest story. If not for the attention to character development, the emotion for each and every character would not have occurred. From being so happy and proud of Amelia to detesting Ambrose, such a fun read. Even though a few things were obvious, it just didn’t matter.

  3. I loved it from beginning to end. Great story. A few editing errors, but only a few. Great characters, fell in love with them.

  4. Loved the story and especially both
    Amelia and Alex
Beautiful love for each other in spite of
    interference from others
I could have kept on reading for me there
was a passion between them that was
    Amazing with a happy ending

  5. I truly enjoyed the story. Having two happy endings made it better. It was a great story with fire and passion. Having just the right amount of drama just fueled the story for me.

  6. Loved this story!! The author weaves the story very well! The characters are vivid. I like the extended epilogues, as I like to see the story wrapped in a neat package. The author does a good job of this.

  7. You can really tell a great story. I loved how Ambrose got Eli involved and then Eli turned on him. Didn’t see that coming. I didn’t like that Amelia gave into her Mother and allowed her to walk her down the aisle. Rogers deserved that honor more, but hey I’m not the author!!! Loved Alexander, Amelia and Tanvi, you developed very good and likeable characters. Ambrose and Louisa were great to dislike! And such sympathy for Raleigh.
Editing still needs some help. For instance a big deal was made about Amelia riding a stallion out to the creek yet it was called a mare and then turned back into a stallion. There were several contradictory remarks like that throughout. Some grammar errors and wrong tenses. Those are the differences between a great writer and a good writer. I want you to be a great writer. (I used to edit my husband’s writing so I pick up on those things easily, sorry.)
Overall this was a really good book. It is a shame though that you made Tanvi and Frances the epilogue, although it was thoroughly enjoyed. Another book about their travails would have been terrific! Best wishes for continued success.

    1. Thank you for your message, my dear!

I really appreciate your kind and honest feedback, dear Cher! It’s always welcome, as it helps me become better and better.

I will keep your comments in mind for my future stories.

I’m glad you enjoyed the story!

  8. What a BEAUTIFUL story of peers and servants! I loved Amelia s courage and spirit. I never knew a woman could inherit a title and of course loose all to her husband. The extended epilogue was great if have ending to Tanvi ‘s story but….. Did not tell how the duke and Amelia faired with children and who inherited which properties when the sons were born. Keep writing great books.

  9. The epilogue nicely gave closure to Tanvi. It was nice for Francis to be a viscount. Tanvi got to be a titled Lady! All that’s missing is Amelia the duchess giving advice on birthing to Tanvi!

  10. What a wonderful love story! Alex and Amelia found true love for each other based on their character and not their titles or wealth. Read this book in one day as I couldn’t wait to see how it ended. Very good story!

  11. Wow what a great book. I enjoyed the story from start to finish. I’m glad both Ameilia an Tavni had their happy endings. It would have been nice to know if Louisa and Raleigh worked out their differences. In some ways I hope Raleigh told her to get lost. He seemed like a nice man and didn’t deserve the way she treated him or her daughter. I dont think I could have been as forgiving as Ameilia was and certainly would not have let her walk me down the isle. Rogers should have done it as was planned. However I really enjoyed this book and the extended epilogue completed the story. My thanks to you Henrietta. Keep up the brilliant writing. I’m looking forward to your next book. I hope its as good as this one.

  12. What a great story line. Enjoyed the characters and their love of life. Henrietta has hit the nail on the head again. She puts her twist on her books to make them enjoyable and keep us entertained. Will continue to read her stories.

  13. Great story. I loved it. The characters were well put together. I really liked the start in Madras as it makes it a little bit different. Keep writing.

  14. I thoroughly enjoyed your book! I love the strong females and hot males! Your descriptions are spot on! I was able to invasion the land as if I was there. Very well written……… On to the next one! Thank you for using you gift to make others happy!

  15. While this book was enjoyable I felt that there were some problems with the plot and it’s pacing. The beginning is much too slow. Chapters one through three could be eliminated as they don’t do much for the story. What’s the point of the Blackthorn’s being introduced other than the ending? As for an English girl wearing Indian dress was totally unrealistic and unbelievable for the time period. I know authors have creative license but The fact Amelia had no European or English dresses to wear? The antagonists aren’t really very much of a threat. I expected Ambrose to at least attempt to seek his revenge. As for the mother, again you are left hanging. Amelia just eventually forgives her after all her scheming with Ambrose? The mother really doesn’t face much consequences for her actions??? I really feel someone dropped the ball a and rushed this to be published. This could be a great book if more time and thought were given to development of the plot and characters. I think this book could benefit from a rewrite.

    1. Thank you so much for your thorough feedback, dear Garna!

You are raising some valid points and have a solid justification for them. I will keep them in mind and will work closer with my editor to get them handled in the future.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts with me, they are very helpful. I hope you enjoy the rest of my stories. Have a great day!

  16. Lovely story great characters you have some great stories to tell , and I love every one I have read so far . It was lovely that Tavi ‘s love came back to her, Thank you

  17. I enjoyed the book and loved the main characters . The time on the boat bored me. Amelia was great when she told her mother and Ambrose off. I didn’t like her forgiving ( kind of ) her mother. Nasty woman . Would like to know about children. Need another extended epilogue .

  18. I loved this book,I could not put it down and had to finally give in to sleep at 3 in the morning.I eagerly will search your other books.

  19. I enjoyed reading this book. The mother was actually not a good person but she never suffered for her transgressions. Ambrose was a joke. He sure backed down when he got called out for his mean ambitions. I loved Raleigh. So glad to see a stepfather be the good guy. I’m already beginning another of your books. One sad thought. Didn’t find out if Alexander had a son to inherit his duchy. Couldn’t find any hint in the extended epilogue. Thanks for writing such good books.

  20. Im a little tired of the extended epilogues. I would rather have the whole story in one reading.

  21. I thoroughly enjoy reading your books. I loved the ending and extended ending and was really happy that everything worked out for everyone. At the beginning, it was a little slow but once you got into the story it was hard to put the book down.

  22. It took me 2weeks to read this book. I could not believe a mother would treat her daughter so badly, so I had to put it away until I got over my disgust with Louise and Ambrose. But I liked the rest of the story after Amelia revealed their scheme to the rest of Raleigh’s family. I thought the epilogue should have been more about the birth of Amelia and Alex’s child. Overall. I enjoyed this book.

  23. Loved the story line but a bit slow to start, the best so far, I read it in 2 days when I should have been doing other things but I couldn’t put it down. I found the time line a bit out, Louisa and Raleigh were 2 months behind Amelia but when they arrived in England, Ambrose said that she had been there for 5 months. There were a couple of incorrect words used and I have never heard of teeth being refered to as dentition, I had to Google to see if it was actually a word but overall the characters were so real and I laughed and cried as I worked my way through, I sign of a good author. Excellent work.

  24. I thoroughly enjoyed the book could not put it down, loved the details of India, and the extended epilogue made everything perfect.

  25. What a wonderful love story. The emotions between the characters were so evident in the way you expressed their thoughts and feelings. The extended epilogue put closure on the lives of the two women so well and furtherhelped to illustrate their close bond.

  26. This is the first I reviewing a book……I loved this book especially the Madras India part , as I am from that same old Madras city. Like everyone I also wanted to know what happened to Tanvi. Thankyou for this wonderful story.

  27. After I got into this book .I really enjoyed it it kept me glued .also the extended piece at the end .was the icing on the cake .very good .

  28. I really agree with all the other cudos that you earned! I am up waaayyy past my bedtime finishing your story . Couldn’t put it down and was glad to see Ambrose in fear of his life.

  29. Thanks so much. I’m 63 today live with my daughter an grandkids. I’m disabled for over 10 years. When i don’t fill good am in pain you an other authors make me forget some with your stories. Thank you cause i love reading

  30. I enjoyed the book very much but you need better proofreaders or editors. Children generally have teeth when they are three years old.
In the extended epilogue it was nice to see Tanvi reunited with her love but it would have been better to learn more about Alexander, Amenia, Grace and the new baby.

  31. You can definitely tell a good story, but you need a whole lot of help with the writing itself. There are so many errors, anachronisms, awkward phrasings, and improbable constructions that it gets in the way of enjoying the story. Please get some help from a good editor!

  32. I enjoyed reading the book. The characters are easy to relate to and the story really touched the heart. I love a good romance and this book is one I will remember.
I like the extended epilogue as well. I did not have to think what happened to Tanvi and Francis.
    Great work.

  33. The book was wonderful and I enjoyed traditions which were followed. I do agree that proof reading needs to be stronger. It is worth the extra cost and many people don’t wish to read misspelled or misspoke words. It can be confusing

  34. Great Read. Different type of plot. Like your characters. Definitely will leave your name in my library roster there. We share author names,😄

  35. This was such an amazing story!! I’ve read a lot of historical romance and this was the first where I read about a mother like Louisa… I was upset for Amelia, I was so happy at the ending… Then to be able to read that Tanvi also found happiness… It made me cry. This was wonderfully told from beginning to end. I look forward to other stories of yours. Keep up the great work!!

  36. Enjoyed reading your book
Thanks so much for extended epilogue
Character’s really became real as reading
    Sincerely Bet

  37. What a wonderful love story. Henrietta reveals in this book what joy is experienced when one finds true love. The story was so intriguing that I did not want to put the book down until Amelia and Tanvi found true love.

  38. A truly heartwarming story. Well written and a great read! Loved the characters, especially Amelia’s fierce independence. Loved her devotion and friendship to Tavia, as well as the story of her and Alexander.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and support, dear Diane. I truly appreciate it!

So glad you enjoyed the story! Make sure to stay tuned because I have more coming!

Thank you again and have a lovely day!

  39. Wonderful book with such interesting characters. Loved that Amelia and Tavni met their true loves. Alexander was a dream and quite different from the usual man of that period. So glad Ambrose got his due.
